In the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, relentless rainfall over the past four days has resulted in the tragic loss of at least eight lives. Numerous villages have been submerged, homes have suffered significant damage, and thousands of hectares of crops have been destroyed, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
During a cabinet meeting in Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that the government is actively working to provide relief to farmers and others affected by the disaster.
The Chief Minister noted that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has successfully rescued 27 individuals in the Dharashiv district, while 200 others have been relocated to safer areas. Continuous rainfall has been observed in various parts of Marathwada since September 20.
The heavy downpour has led to overflowing dams, necessitating the release of water. According to a revenue officer, the fatalities since September 20 include three in Latur, two in Beed, and one each in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded, and Dharashiv, primarily due to lightning strikes, drowning, and other causes.
Officials have reported that 159 villages in Dharashiv have been affected, with 186 livestock lost, while other districts like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Beed are experiencing flood-like conditions.
